Dr. Bandy will do everything in his power to save a tooth. But sometimes a tooth may be beyond repair. Under these circumstances, Dr. Bandy may recommend extracting the tooth before it causes more harm to your oral health. Here’s what you need to know about tooth extractions.
Your comfort and safety are of utmost importance. Before we do anything, Dr. Bandy will inject a local anesthetic into the soft tissue by your tooth. Once you’re numb and comfortable, we’ll move onto the next step of the dental extraction procedure.
Dr. Bandy will use dental forceps to loosen the tooth and an elevator to lift it out of its socket. He’ll then have you bite down on a gauze pad to help your body form a blood clot in the empty socket. This blood clot will act as a bandaid and will help protect the underlying bone and nerves.
It’s very important that you don’t do anything to dislodge the blood clot in the socket. Otherwise, you may develop a painful complication called dry socket. The good news is that following our aftercare instructions will help you heal and recover in a timely manner. That way, you’ll be able to return to your normal life as soon as possible.
Once the body detects a missing tooth, it starts to absorb the minerals in your jaw to use elsewhere. That’s why we recommend scheduling an appointment with Dr. Bandy to discuss your tooth replacement options.
At Bandy Dental, we offer dental implants and same-day bridges. Dr. Bandy will explain the pros and cons of each procedure so you can make the best decision for your smile.
